BENEFITS OF LINE DANCING: The benefits of line dancing and all types of dancing are many: weight loss, control of high blood pressure, control of diabetes, cholesterol, stress management, reduce risk of heart disease, strengthen bones and muscles without hurting your joints, improve your posture and balance, which in turn can prevent falls, increase your stamina and flexibility and build confidence. Studies have shown that exercise and eating right will help to keep us in better shape (check out the Dancing Diva section for healthy recipes). In a 2003 study published by the New England Journnal of Medicine, it found that ballroom dancing, least twice a week made people less likely to develop dementia. Dancing can give you a great mind/body workout! Researches are learning that regular physical activity in general can help keep your body, including your brain, health as you age. Dancing requires you to remember dance steps and sequences and boots brain power by improving memory skills. Prelevant in our African American Community is high blood pressure, heart disease and Diabetes. With exercise and diet, studies have shown that you can get control of some of the health risks we currently face. A quote from Woman's Day Magazine says: "take a dance class. Locate group lessons at a dance hall, studio or community center. Dancing is energizing and social, and it burns 200 to 375 calories an hour, depending on tempo and intensity. Choose from ballroom, salsa, folk, swing, square or line dancing." Not only are the baby boomers dancing, but so are our seniors! More and more seniors are dancing simply for the fun of and for the medical benefits as well. It keeps them sharp and keeps their brain active. They socialize and have a lot of fun. Just because you are retired does not mean that you have to sit at home and do nothing. Find a line dance class and take control of your life! Some amazing line dancing facts: (1) as a result of dancing, soul line dancers have lost weight, reduced their stress and cholesterol levels, lowered their blood pressure and hardly ever catch colds; (2) soul line dancers come in all colors, shapes and sizes and have incredibly high IQ's; and (3) it is spreading like a virus!!! People, this is a fun way to start getting in shape and meeting new people and have fun all at the same time. This is why dancing is so much fun and is so popular. It is not that we are trying to take over, but if you do not have a partner, you do not have to wait to be asked to dance! You can jump up and joint he fun on the floor and best of all, get in shape, all while having fun.
